What Replaced Shopify Exchange

Shopify closed Exchange in 2022 and never replaced it. Its best idea, numbers straight from the store, did not have to die with it.

Shopify Exchange was Shopify's own marketplace for buying and selling Shopify stores, and it shut down on November 1, 2022 with no replacement from Shopify. Its best property was that listing data came straight from the connected store. Kairos Exchange rebuilds that idea as an independent marketplace: revenue verified from read-only Shopify order data, with escrow and an audit trail around the deal.

What Shopify Exchange was

Exchange ran inside Shopify itself, which meant a listing's sales figures were pulled directly from the store rather than typed in by the seller. When it closed, trade coverage quoted Shopify telling merchants the app would be fully decommissioned, with no exceptions. The same coverage reported the marketplace generated less than 1 percent of Shopify's revenue.

What Exchange Got Right

Direct-from-store data. Because Exchange was part of Shopify, the revenue on a listing was the revenue in the store. No screenshots, no self-reporting, no reconciliation gap. That single property is what most marketplaces still have not replaced, and it is the one buyers miss most.

Why It Closed

The reported rationale was focus: the marketplace was a sliver of Shopify's revenue next to subscriptions and payments, and Shopify was cutting side products at the time. Merchants mid-deal were told to swap contact details with buyers before the cutoff and finish elsewhere. Shopify has not launched a replacement since.

Where Shopify Stores Trade Now

The volume moved to open marketplaces like Flippa, curated venues like Empire Flippers, and startup marketplaces like Acquire.com. Each covers different ground, and none reproduces the direct-from-store-data property by default: on most of them, verifying the numbers is the buyer's job.

The Successor to the Idea

Kairos Exchange exists to rebuild what Exchange got right, independently. Every listing's revenue is reconciled against read-only Shopify order data before it goes live. The verification memo is published, escrow sits on every deal, and the audit trail cannot be edited after the fact. Verified inventory is opening now, and the waitlist gets first access.

The bottom line

Exchange's one great property was that listing revenue came from the store itself, not the seller's keyboard. No marketplace replaced that by default, and buyers have been re-verifying by hand ever since. Kairos rebuilds the property independently: read-only order data, a published memo, escrow on every deal. If you came here looking for Exchange, this is the successor to the idea.

The People Checking Your Store

Eight years, 200+ ecom brands, EUR 200M+ in tracked sales - and we read the source data every morning. When we say a number is real, it is because we read the source it came from - not the listing form.

ZenoX ad-management figures, not Kairos deal volume - Kairos hasn't closed a deal yet.

The short version

Numbers Are Cheap. Proof Is Rare

One question decides every venue: who proved the numbers, and can you read what they found.

For buyers mid-deal

Buying a Store Somewhere Else?

Kairos Due Diligence works on any deal - Flippa, a broker, a private sale. A person reads the store's raw numbers and writes you a report. If the deal is bad, the report says walk away. From EUR 1.5k, no account needed.

Common Questions

Why did Shopify shut down Exchange?

Trade coverage at the time reported the marketplace produced less than 1 percent of Shopify's revenue, and Shopify was consolidating around its core products. Merchants were told the app would be fully decommissioned on November 1, 2022, with no exceptions.

Is there an official Shopify replacement?

No. Shopify has not launched a successor marketplace since Exchange closed in 2022. Stores now change hands on independent marketplaces and through brokers.
